How to Perfect Your Brown University Supplemental Portfolio

Applicants may submit up to 15 images, with each image file not exceeding 5 MB. Accepted formats include .jpg, .gif, and .png. A non-refundable processing fee of $10 is required at the time of submission. However, if the applicant has a Common Application fee waiver, the SlideRoom fee will be automatically waived. Fee waivers can also be requested by emailing admission@brown.edu before submitting the SlideRoom portfolio. QuestBridge applicants submitting an art portfolio should use the QuestBridge visual art program in SlideRoom.

Portfolios should be submitted via Slideroom: https://brown.slideroom.com/#/Login.

Applicants uploading a visual art submission should consider the following:

  • Portfolios should serve as a strong supplement to the application, thoughtfully conceived, and demonstrate above-average visual art talent.

  • Submissions may include class assignments as well as work produced outside the classroom, reflecting the applicant's personal areas of interest.

  • If photographs are included, they should transcend casual snapshots or hobbyist photography and present a variety of artistically sound content.

  • A short statement about the applicant's interest in art may also be included.

Supplementary Materials FAQ

Which teachers should I choose to send recommendations to Brown University?

Brown University requires two letters of recommendation from teachers who have taught the applicant in major academic subjects such as science, social studies, mathematics, a foreign language, or English. The university will accept up to four letters of recommendation through the Common Application. Applicants considering a Bachelor of Science degree or the Program in Liberal Medical Education should ensure that at least one of their recommendations comes from a math or science teacher.

May I submit additional letters of recommendation?

Brown University has found that the required counselor recommendation and two teacher recommendations provide sufficient information to make a thoughtful and informed admission decision. However, if someone has unique insights into an applicant’s strengths or accomplishments that are not covered in the required recommendations, an additional person may write on the applicant's behalf. Applicants may request one optional recommendation through the Common Application in addition to the required recommendations.

Supplementary letters of recommendation beyond this cannot be submitted through the Common Application and should be sent directly by the recommender. In such cases, recommenders should email their letter to documents@brown.edu or fax it to 401-863-9300. Recommenders are asked to include the applicant’s full name, date of birth, and high school in their letter to ensure proper matching with the application.

May I submit an update to my application or other supplementary information, and if so, how?

Applicants to Brown University are neither required nor expected to submit additional materials as part of the admission process, but the option is available to any candidate. If there are updates or additional materials you wish to share with Brown, you may do so through your Brown Applicant Portal. This may include items such as a resume, poetry or a brief writing sample, an abstract of scientific research, an independent research project, or any additional information that could not be included in your Common Application.

If your application is deferred from the Early Decision round or waitlisted during Regular Decision, and you would like to submit a letter of continued interest, you can upload it directly through your Portal. Please note that Brown does not accept updates via email.

For applicants who are accomplished in music or visual art and wish to include these types of supplements, please review the guidelines and submit those materials via SlideRoom.

What kind of awards or distinctions should I include in my application?

Applicants should highlight achievements that make them feel particularly proud or that effectively demonstrate their talents and interests. A carefully selected sampling of accomplishments often makes a stronger impression than an exhaustive list.

For academic awards, it is important to provide enough detail for the admissions team to understand the context of the accomplishment. For instance, if an applicant has won a poetry contest or been recognized in a math competition, they should include general information such as the number of entrants or competitors and whether the award was for an individual or team achievement.

Descriptions are not necessary for common extracurricular recognition, such as first chair of the orchestra, science club officer, sports team captain, or yearbook editor, but it is important to note the title or role. If an activity or achievement might be less familiar to those outside the applicant's community, a brief explanation may be helpful.
