Applicants to Yale College should carefully consider whether to submit supplementary material with their application. Most successful candidates submit only the required application materials, as the Admissions Committee places the greatest emphasis on these documents. Therefore, it is advisable for applicants to concentrate their efforts primarily on the required elements of the application.
However, if an applicant possesses a significant and well-developed talent that cannot be adequately conveyed through the standard application materials, they may consider submitting additional materials such as an audio recording, musical score, art samples, writing samples, scientific research paper, film, or dance video. Applicants are advised not to contact faculty members to request auditions or reviews of their work.
How to submit supplementary material
Art samples should be submitted through the Arts Portfolio Submission Tool, available on the Yale Admissions Status Portal.
Using the Arts Portfolio Submission Tool - Visual Art
To submit a visual arts supplement, applicants should follow these steps before and after submitting their application:
Indicate the intention to submit an arts supplement when completing the application by answering “Yes” to the question, “Do you plan to submit an arts or science/engineering supplement as part of your Yale application?” and selecting the type(s) of submission.
After submitting the application and receiving confirmation from the admissions office, activate the Yale Admissions Status Portal. A confirmation email with a personalized link and PIN will be sent to the applicant.
Upload the media via the Arts Portfolio Submission Tool, which will appear on the Yale Admissions Status Portal. The tool accepts most video, audio, image, and document file types, as well as URLs to videos hosted online.
Complete the Arts Supplement Questionnaire to provide additional information and finalize the arts portfolio.
The deadline for uploading media via the Arts Portfolio Submission Tool and completing the Arts Supplement Questionnaire is November 8 for Single-Choice Early Action candidates, January 9 for Regular Decision candidates, and March 1 for transfer candidates.
Please Note:
The Arts Portfolio Submission Tool will only appear for applicants who indicated their intention to submit an arts supplement when completing the Common Application, Coalition Application, or Yale QuestBridge Questionnaire.
Once the Arts Supplement Questionnaire is submitted, the arts portfolio is closed and cannot be amended.
Supplementary materials, like other parts of the application, are subject to audit and verification.
Supplementary Materials - Visual Art
Applicants who are advanced visual artists, whether or not they intend to major in art as undergraduates, may consider submitting an art portfolio as part of their application. It is important to note that selected portfolios are reviewed by faculty members from the Yale School of Art, not admissions officers. Applicants should only submit work if their artwork is a significant and integral part of their application and demonstrates a high level of ability for a high school artist. Submissions should be limited to between 5 and 8 pieces.
